Banana Blueberry Buttons

Here’s a quick recipe for a fun little indoor frozen treat. I made it initially with just bananas, but it was such a hit with out middle child, that I added blueberries and changed the name from “banana treat” to “buttons”. We’re having a blast making these with different ingredients, and it’s a fun change from traditional smoothies in a cup.

Ingredients:
2 bananas (peeled)
Handful of blueberries

Instructions:
1.Blend blueberries and ONE banana together
2.Pour into your Kiddo Feedo tray, filling each compartment 1/3 of the way
3.Slice your second banana into round 1/2inch pieces
4.Place a small piece into each compartment
5.Freeze for 4 hours or until frozen
6.Once frozen, simply pop out and serve!

Nuby Sure Grip Miracle Mat Section Plate

As a mom of three, I have to say that weaning is definitely one of my favourite stages of our childrens’ lives so far. It’s a time to taste new flavours, see new colours and feel new textures. It’s just a beautiful time of exploration for the little ones, and I am honoured to be able to see it happen first hand. Of course during this stage, our children are perfecting their motor skills, and slowly figuring out exactly what eating entails, so messes and spills are expected. With that said, every so often, there comes a time where a product comes out on the market that helps make our lives as parents just a little bit easier. This is where this new plate by Nuby comes in.

The plate I am referring to is the Nuby Sure Grip Miracle Mat Section Plate. It’s made of 100% silicone, and suctions to most flat surfaces, making it harder for children to pick up the plate or tip it over. We have an adorable and energetic little girl who uses the “pick it up and chuck it” technique to let us know she has completed a meal. Our middle child used to do the same thing, and while it can be cute to see the look of satisfaction on their faces, cleaning up the mess is not always as amusing. These suction plates make it a little harder for children to pick up, which means I have the pleasure of being able to blink without fear of her making a swift move and making a huge mess.

My Favourite Features:
•They are made from 100% silicone, which is BPA free, and a lot safer for our children than plastic plates. Many parents are shying away from plastic tableware because toxic chemicals can leach into the food. That is a scary thought.
•The material is also microwave and dishwasher safe. So you’re free to reheat your child’s food without worry.
•They stick to the table and high chair! If you pick it up from a corner, it comes right up. Our baby girl is a year old, tugs at the sections of the plate, and has no success in flipping it over. I can’t count how many possible messes I have avoided cleaning.
•Separate compartments on one plate allow you to serve multiple items without them touching.

Additional Thoughts & Observations:
The plate does not fit the tray for baby’s high chair. I would love to see a slightly smaller model of plates. In the meantime, if you have the same issue, you can strap baby in the high chair, and push the chair to the table to eat with the adults. You can see from the images above that she’s still slightly short for the table, but she reaches her food fine and enjoys eating at the table with her older siblings.

Another thing I noticed is that if the flat surface of the plate is the slightest bit oily, it will not stick half as well. Be sure to wash it well, be it through the dishwasher or by hand. Also take note that it fits MOST surfaces, and I say that because I have seen one or two reviews stating that it didn’t actually stick to someone’s table. We have a wooden table, and a glass table, and our plate sticks firmly to both with no problems at all. Overall I am happy with our suction plate by Nuby, and our children approve of it as well!

Review: Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker

As a mom of three, it is my mission to organize my household tasks in a way that saves me time. Keeping the children engaged throughout the day is a task in itself, so I can’t afford to spend hours in the kitchen, despite the fact that I enjoy it so much! I’ve been making homemade baby and toddler food for a few years now, and while I absolutely enjoy the health benefits of making their food myself, it can take up a considerable amount of time. Then, in comes Baby Brezza‘s One Step Baby Food Maker. I have been using it for the last few weeks and I have lots to share about it and my experiences with it.

The Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker provides parents with a way to prepare homemade organic baby food without the fuss of standing in front of a stove while it’s cooking. At the push of a button, you can steam and blend a combination of ingredients to create gourmet masterpieces for your little ones. The bowl holds 2.5 cups and the machine only weights 3.3Lbs!

The second I put it down on the kitchen counter, I realized that it had little suctions at the bottom. This means that it won’t slide around, which is essential when handling hot food. The Baby Brezza One Step is straight forward and easy to use. Add your water, wash and cut ingredients of your choice, add them to the bowl, set the timer and the machine does the rest! It’s pretty user friendly. The kids helped me prepare my first batch and we all had fun. It’s not as loud as our conventional blender, and the blending process is fairly quick.

It makes me sound lazy to say that life is easier when everything is at the touch of a button, but in all honesty, having kids requires much of our time and energy, and any device that allows you to get work done with minimal attention is a great help.

Pros:
•At only 3.3Lbs, this compact machine is easily portable, which makes it perfect for travel. Take it on vacation and use in your hotel room, bring it with you while seeing family or friends. Not only is it convinient, but might just encourage someone else to make their own homemade baby food someday.
•It beeps before switching from steaming mode to blending mode. This feature seems simple, but it’s more useful than you think. Last week I was preparing food with it, and baby fell asleep. Once the beeping began, I was able to jump up and stop the second stage from taking place. Baby slept soundly for another two hours, and I was able to blend the food at a later time that day.
•BPA/phthalate free and easier to clean than my larger size blender
•A regular handmixer works fine for making baby food, but if you’re looking for a machine that does everything for you, this is the way to go.
•Compact space helps the food steam faster

Cons:
•Many parents are gravitating towards glass and silicone products that are designed for baby feeding. While the Baby Brezza One Step bowl is made of plastic, it’s also BPA free.
•Keep in mind that the bowl is NOT leak proof. If you prepare food and want to store some for the same day, it’s best to store it in an air tight

Notes/Tips on the Product:
•Although the Baby Brezza One Step is marketed as a tool for making purees, I noticed fairly quickly that it’s useful even after the early weaning stages. You can prepare steamed veggies, fish and more for both children and adults. Prepare tasty smoothies, applesauce and more with it. The possibilities are endless.
•Do you prepare your baby food in advance and freeze for later? Many parents are reluctant to use a microwave to defrost frozen food. The Baby Brezza one step allows you to defrost your homemade baby food.
•Afraid of overcooking or undercooking? Keep their cooking guide handy.

NumNum Pre-Spoon GOOtensils

I believe the weaning stage is a time of exploration of new colours, textures and flavours. My milk is still her primary source for nutrition, so we are easing into this stage gracefully, and learning together as we go. I noticed a trend on social media, where parents seem almost forced to choose between serving purees or finger food (also known as baby led weaning). With our children, we have always offered both. One fun way to allow them to dabble in both worlds is with the NumNum Pre-Spoons. They were designed not only to be little spoons for little hands, but also to make the self feeding experience a little easier for them. I will explain.

So the NumNum Pre-Spoons are pretty small, measuring at 4″ L x 1″ W x .5″ D. The size is perfect for our little girl’s hands during this fun weaning stage. The heads are flat, and the purpose for this is so that children can hold the spoon handles in any direction and will still be able to retrieve food. No need to scoop the food out as we adults must do. Children simply need to do the dipping motion, and then eat what the NumNum spoons gather. Of course with adult spoons, things won’t be so easy for her, but we’re trying to take things one step at a time. She’ll learn about adult spoons when the time comes.

My favourite feature is definitely the textured surfaces. They make the spoons easy to grip, which is great when slippery food is involved. I’m speaking about you, my dear hand mashed bananas! Easy grip isn’t the only benefit from the textured surfaces, as these spoons are perfect on the gums. Teething was never a huge ordeal with any of our children, but baby girl does have her fussy days. I have noticed lately that after eating with her NumNum spoons, she sits back and eases her little gums by chewing on the rubbery spoon tips. They are also BPA-, PVC-, and phthalates-free.

The GOOtensils set comes with two spoons. One spoon is for food of a thin consistency, while the other is for thicker mixtures. I mostly steam and handmash baby girl’s food, so a thicker consistency is usually what she gets. Even with this being the case, I am following her lead, and I give her both spoons so that she can decide what works for her. Sometimes she eats from both, while other times, she eats from one and chews on the other to ease her gums. I like that each spoon is for another step in the weaning process, but still come packaged together. There is also a less risk of a huge mess, as the food sticks to the spoons. You can imagine how much of a nightmare it is when children use adult spoons and have to rotate them to gather the food. I’m not a fan of those large clean up sessions!

Favourite Features:
•They are dishwasher safe. I put them on the top rack and let the machine do the rest. When items are not safe in the dishwasher, it can be a bit of a hassle to have to wash them separately from everything else. We have three children, so it’s a full house over here. The simpler the task, the better.
•They made baby more confident. You can definitely see the frustration build when little ones struggle to get tasks done on their own. I mean, who could blame them? Imagine having delicious homemade food in front of you, but having poor motor skills keeping you from gobbling it down! Well the spoons collect the food on impact, so that makes life that much easier for the kiddies. It leaves more time to actually enjoy the food, rather than focusing all their attention of trying to retrieve it long enough for it to get in their mouths. Mind you, I do feed her from time to time. Whether or not she self feeds really depends on the day and how she feels.
•They are great for teething babies. They were designed for food, but let’s face it, teething can occur months before the gums are cut. The rubbery end of the GOOtensils is so perfect for baby girl’s itchy gums. Even when she’s not eating, sometimes I just pass one to her to chew on…whatever it takes to ease the discomfort.

Note:
•Quick heads up that my blue spoon faded a little with time. Mine still works perfectly, but it’s now a lighter shade of blue. Our baby obviously doesn’t care about the shade. It’s all about the food, and using a product that helps her do so.

Pineapple, Pear, Dragon Fruit & Coconut Water

Keep in mind for this combo that the ingredients are pretty runny, and it will not be very thick. I serve this one to baby girl in a sippy cup rather than with a spoon. It’s not thick like the smoothies we normally make, so I just call it juice!

Ingredients:
1 Pineapple
2 Pears
1 Dragon fruit
A little coconut water for desire consistency

Instructions:
1.Rinse, peel and chop your pineapple and dragon fruit
2.Wash and chop your pear
3.Combine ingredients in blender
4.Add coconut water for desired consistency
